We have decided to start the Public Poetry Potluck Series in downtown Marquette, MI for the sake of the audible arts! Poetry Readings are a fantastic way for people to express their writing. When I lived in Marinette, WI, a friend of mine created the PIC Foundation which held poetry readings on a monthly basis. I did not realize how much I liked attending these events until I moved to Marquette, where there where weren’t any public poetry events being held on a regular basis.
With the help of Kim Nixon and Annie E, the poetry readings are under way! We have decided to have a potluck along with readings so people feel more comfortable and get to know each other. The potluck also is a great way to have a variety of goodies without one person having to supply everything. We would also like to encourage people to bring a dish to pass for the potluck, but it is not necessary. We do ask that everyone please bring their own table service (cup, plate, fork etc.) as we are just individuals running these events, there is no direct funds available for the readings.
The poetry readings always start off with a potluck, where people can get to know each other, then the featured poet, then the open mic. If you are unable to attend a certain part of the event, feel free to show up whenever. The entrance in in the back of the listening area, so it is not very disturbing.
Coffee will be provided by Dead River Coffee of downtown Marquette. They have been extremely generous and are sponsoring our Poetry Readings with freshly roasted coffee. Please remember your coffee mug!
We are also very grateful for the Marquette Downtown Development Association for allowing us the use of the Commons Building. This building has a very inviting atmosphere with a fireplace and plenty of seating.
We are having featured poets each reading. If you are interested in becoming a featured poet, please contact me: beth_millner@yahoo.com, or feel free to leave a comment on the blog.
